Job Summary: Reporting directly to the Senior Director of Finance and Administration, the Business Manager plays a key role in overseeing a high volume of complex financial processes that support the operational success of the School. This position calls for an individual with strong business acumen who is detail-oriented, highly analytical, and a creative problem-solver—someone who thrives in a fast-paced, growing environment and consistently delivers results.

The Business Manager will supervise the Financial Operations Coordinator and collaborate closely with the School's Employee Operations and Grant Management teams. This is an action-oriented role that requires exceptional organizational and project management skills, along with a high degree of initiative, sound independent judgment, and professional discretion.

Minimum Education and Experience

Bachelor's degree and five years of related accounting and office management/supervisory experience or an equivalent combination of education and experience.



Preferred Education and Experience

Preferred Qualifications:
  • Bachelor's degree in Accounting, Finance, Business Administration, or a related field; equivalent combination of education and relevant experience may be considered
  • 3–5 years of progressive experience in a higher education business office or similar environment
  • Demonstrated supervisory or team leadership experience in a financial or administrative setting
  • Advanced proficiency in Microsoft Excel, including the use of formulas, pivot tables, and data analysis tools
  • Familiarity with Uniform Guidance and federal research administration practices
  • Experience working with enterprise financial systems (e.g., PeopleSoft, Oracle, or similar)
  • Strong understanding of budget development, financial reporting, and reconciliation processes within a university or research-focused institution
  • Excellent organizational, analytical, and communication skills with a proven ability to manage multiple priorities in a dynamic environment

Essential Duties and Responsibilities

Duties & Responsibilities: The Business Manager for the School of Behavioral and Brain Sciences (BBS) supports the Senior Director of Finance and Administration with day-to-day fiscal management and other business services of BBS through the following activities:
  • Monitors core operating budgets within the School and processes related transactions, such as budget journals and other correcting entries.
  • Oversees the BBS reconciliation process and ensures compliance with appropriate documentation and timely approvals.
  • Serves as a budget consultant for the School by identifying appropriate funding sources for BBS-related activities and exercising sound professional judgment to minimize financial risk.
  • Tracks commitments and soft encumbrances; provides accurate budget projections to School leadership and budget owners.
  • Prepares both routine and ad hoc financial reports for the School leadership.
  • Provides one-on-one financial training for staff, including instruction on policies and procedures, account reconciliations, and PeopleSoft modules.
  • Supports and mentors department ASOs and finance leads within BBS centers on all financial operations.
  • Reviews and approves non-research-related reimbursements, purchases, and OneCard transactions.
  • Collaborates closely with the Manager of Research Administration to coordinate funding sources for School personnel.
  • Collaborates closely with the Employee Operations Manager to troubleshoot and resolve departmental payroll issues; verifies monthly and semi-monthly payroll queries to identify potential pay issues and/or funding discrepancies.
  • Reviews and approves transactions related to appointments, supplements, funding changes, and job attribute changes to ensure accuracy.
  • Establishes a work environment that fosters participation, respect, and excellence, while promoting professional relationships and open communication among BBS centers and departments.
  • Encourages team building and a strong people-oriented approach, emphasizing patience and flexibility in working with others.
  • Participates in special projects, task forces, and committees.
  • Regularly attends training and meetings to remain proficient in UTD policies and procedures, software, programs, and functional areas.
  • Performs tasks to a high standard, ensuring fiscal, employment, and privacy compliance in accordance with applicable laws, regulations, policies, and procedures.
  • May assist with events, activities, commencement, conferences, and meetings for faculty, staff, students, the department, and the School.
  • Performs other duties as assigned.

Additional Information

Remote Work: After the appropriate training period, this position may be eligible for a hybrid (partly remote/partly in office) work schedule, subject to business need and manager approval. Must be located within the DFW Area for prompt arrival on campus with a 24-hour notice. A UT Dallas Remote Work Agreement will be required within 14 days after approval.
