Summary:  The Nurse Practitioner (NP) provides preceptorship, mentorship, and support to RN-APs within the framework of quality & risk management and the standards of practice set by the Nova Scotia College of Nursing (NSCN). This role involves clinical practice, collaboration, preceptorship, and professional development responsibilities.    Key Responsibilities: Clinical Practice:

  • Provide clinical consultation to RN-APs
  • Serve as the MRP when required for the following:
  • Perform comprehensive health assessments, diagnose health conditions, and develop treatment plans
  • Prescribe medications, including controlled substances, as authorized by Nova Scotia legislation
  • Order and interpret diagnostic tests
  • Perform procedures within the NP scope of practice 

Collaboration and Consultation:

  • Establish and maintain collaborative relationships with RN-APs and other healthcare providers
  • Provide expert clinical advice and support to RN-APs
  • Participate in interdisciplinary case conferences and care planning meetings if required
  • Facilitate seamless care transitions and referrals when needed 

Preceptorship and Education:

  • Serve as a clinical preceptor for VON RN-AP students if needed
  • Guiding RN-AP students through hands-on learning experiences
  • Discuss learning needs, styles, strengths, and growth opportunities with students to tailor the learning experience
  • Provide ongoing constructive feedback on students' clinical performance and progress
  • Mentor RN-AP students by sharing expertise, providing guidance, and fostering professional development
  • Mentor and educate RN-APs on best practices and scope of practice
  • Participate in quality improvement initiatives and practice audits if required
  • Contribute to policy development related to collaborative practice when needed

Professional Development and Research:

  • Maintain current knowledge of best practices and emerging trends in primary and home healthcare
  • Participate in ongoing professional development activities
  • Engage in nursing research and quality improvement projects

  • Promotes a safe and healthy workplace ensuring workplace conduct and activities are in accordance with the provincial Occupational Health and Safety Act and Regulations and compliant with the VON Safety Management System, including all Policies, Safe Work Practices and Procedures.  
  • Abides by all VON policies and work practices.
  • Abides by all confidentiality and protection of personal information policies, regulations and practices and ensures appropriate safeguards are in place within their role.
  • Works in collaboration with other staff in a team approach to service delivery.
External and Internal Relationships:
  • Collaborates with RN-APs and other healthcare providers
  • Communicates with clients and their families
  • Interacts with healthcare administrators and policymakers
  • Engages with professional nursing organizations and regulatory bodies
Education, Designations and Experience:
  • Master's degree in Nursing-Advanced Practice Stream required
  • Current certification in BCLS
  • Current registration with NSCN with active practicing status, with license as NP in NS
  • Minimum 5 years of advanced clinical practice experience
  • Experience in collaborative practice and consultation
  • Preceptorship education an asset
Skill Requirements:
  • Thorough knowledge of NP scope of practice in Nova Scotia
  • Strong clinical decision-making and diagnostic skills
  • Excellent interprofessional collaboration and communication skills
  • Proficiency in electronic medical records and telemedicine platforms
  • Leadership and mentoring abilities
  • Ability to critically appraise evidence and apply best practices
  • Strong organizational and time management skills
Other:
  • Must have a valid driver's license and access to a reliable vehicle with proof of vehicle insurance
  • Willingness to travel to support RN-APs and attend meetings if needed
  • Police check required
Working conditions and physical demands: This role requires a detail-oriented approach in a dynamic environment, with physical activity including lifting, carrying (using proper techniques), bending, reaching, kneeling, and other movements that emphasize good body mechanics. Individuals in the role are required to walk, sit, stand, and climb stairs throughout the day, with some tasks requiring fine hand movements.
