Summary of Position
The NRECA legislative affairs team is responsible for advocating for electric cooperative policy priorities in the United States Congress. We are searching for a junior-level lobbyist to assist with our broadband and telecommunications policy work. The position will interact with the broader broadband advocacy team which includes legislative and regulatory professionals. Success will include working on Capitol Hill, collaborating across NRECA departments, and building relationships within our membership to identify problems and advocate for solutions to the public policy problems facing electric cooperatives involved in broadband delivery.
Key Responsibilities
- Coordinate with broadband legislative and regulatory professionals at NRECA to identify problems and advocate for public policy solutions for electric cooperatives providing broadband to their communities.
- Develop subject matter expertise in broadband and telecommunications policy.
- Educate and build relationships with Members of Congress and Congressional staff on issues facing electric cooperative broadband providers.
- Research and understand how public policy proposals affect co-op broadband.
- Build relationships with NRECA electric co-op members in the broadband delivery business.
- Work with electric co-ops members to advocate to their Members of Congress.
- Utilize NRECA advocacy tools like our Political Action Committee and our grassroots network to influence good policy outcomes.
Required Qualifications and Skills
- Bachelor's Degree in Government, Political Science, Communications or related field.
- 3 or more years of experience with congressional offices, political campaigns, or federal and/or state agency or industry relating to broadband or telecommunications policy.
- Strong written and oral communication skills
- Ability to think strategically and creatively and to apply creative solutions to individual and team work.
- Ability to communicate, both verbally and in writing, with Members of Congress and staff and a diverse membership in a clear and precise manner.
Preferred Qualifications
- Experience on Capitol Hill or at a trade association
- Experience advocating on broadband and telecommunications issues
Essential Physical Requirements:
- The worker is required to have close visual acuity to perform an activity such as: preparing and analyzing data and figures; transcribing; viewing a computer terminal and extensive reading.
- Exerting up to 20 pounds of force occasionally, and/or up to 10 pounds of force frequently, and/or a negligible amount of force constantly to move objects. If the use of arm and/or leg controls requires exertion of forces greater than that for sedentary work and the worker sits most of the time, the job is rated for light work.
